MMC at the Monadnock Region Natural History Conference!

On November 15, 2025, Monadnock Mushroom Club attended the third Monadnock Region Natural History Conference, a nature-based conference with a focus on the Monadnock Region. MMC shared a table with Monadnock Bird and Nature Club, and Tom and Nate chatted with conference attendees throughout the day, engaging with over 40 people during the conference, gaining new members, and selling merch, books, and other materials developed by MMC members.

The following day, MMC hosted a foray for the conference, where 16 people explored Horatio Colony, looking for fungi and also enjoying and discussing many other taxa. Despite the cold weather, the precipitation seemed to be productive for mushrooms, and many species were found, such as funeral bells, two species of oysters, many shelf fungi, and fruiting Chlorociboria mushrooms. Conference participants were hunting around the woods with childlike enthusiasm and running back to George and John, who expertly identified each of their finds.

Today's foray on a beautiful autumn day was held at Keene's Goose Pond, where beavers were actively felling trees into the water in advance of winter. Conditions were dry, as in all recent forays. Nonetheless, there were notable fungal encounters. Among the edibles were king boletes, numerous slippery jacks and sooty wax caps, a hedgehog and a birch bolete. Other interesting finds included surprise webcaps, hypholomas, trembling crust, and the find of the day, a sheep polypore.

Yesterday's foray was conducted in Annett State Reservation in Rindge. Again we faced the consequences of persisting region-wide dryness. This site often features hedgehog mushrooms this time of year, but not this time. As in past forays, we did find edibles like matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare), sooty wax cap (Hygrophorus fuligineus), dotted stalk suillus/butterball (S. weaverae), and late oyster (Sarcomyxa serotina), though not in abundance, as well as chaga (on black birch). Perhaps these fruiting soon will be more generous, given the rain that appeared later that day and that is forcast to continue for much of this week. Other interesting finds included a large eruption of trembling crust (Phlebia/Merulius tremellosa) as well as of sharp-scaly pholiota. The site features an unusually high concentration of blueberry bushes with witch's brooms on the shore of Black Pond. These brooms are induced by the fungal rust Puccinastrum goeppertianum, for which balsam firs serve as alternate host. Thanks to Tom, Lori and Pat for assisting with this outing and dispensing culinary tips.

Yesterday's foray on a windless, warm and sunny day at Meetinghouse Pond in Marlborough NH offered the opportunity to acknowledge the good sense of some fungal genera for opting not to fruit during historic drought conditions. Notable for their absence were hedgehogs, amanitas, russulas, honeys, chickens, hens, scalycaps and stinkhorns. Notable finds included matsutakes in sub-prime condition, exuberant green cheese polypores, a large jelly tooth (Pseudohydnum gelatinosum), emerging fall oysters (Sarcomyxa serotina) in good edible shape, a graceful bolete (Australoboletus gracilis), and an ash-tree bolete (Boletinellus meruloides). The latter two fungi were our only boletes. The pond, fall foliage, and birdlife were spectacular--making for a nice walk in the woods. Bring on the rain!

Yesterday's foray at Harvard Forest in Petersham MA was held jointly with Boston Mycolological Club and Pioneer Valley Mycological Association. It was a beautiful Fall day for foraging: warm and sunny. There had been up to 2 inches of rain the preceding week but the streams and overall conditions remained dry, as in the entire region. Nonetheless, with a small army of searchers, we found a decent selection of fungi and fellow travelers like slime molds. Although there was not a bounty of choice edibles, large beautiful cauliflowers (Sparassis) were found under red pine as well as a selection of puffballs. There were no true chanterelles, but quite a few false chanterelles (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca). Amanitas were scant and largely limited to the false death cap A. lavendula. An attractive selection of corts included C. corrugatus and showy purple fruit bodies that may have been C. alboviolaceus. Boletes were dominated by dotted stalk Suillus weaverae but also included other attractive examples of Retiboletus and the seldom-encountered novelty bolete Pseudoboletus parasiticus emerging from a pigskin earth ball (Scleroderma citrina). Other intriguing finds included Baeospora fruiting on white pine cones, the basidiolichen Multiclavida mucida, the jelly cup Guepiniopsis buccina, the cluster cap Connopus acervatus, buttery collybia Rhodocollybia butyracea (attached to a pine cone!) plus another of the same genus R. maculata, and the alder scalycap Pholiota alnicola. Bring on the rain!
